Broderick Smith has been a clerk, storeman, soldier, advertising copywriter, graphic artist and actor, as well as a singer-songwriter.
He's a mainstay of the roots based singer - songwriter scene and together with his good friend the brilliant Matt Walker on guitar always delivers music that inspires younger musicians and constantly evolves with the times that he lives in. This is definitely not a hits and memories type of act. As a prominent national journalist said ' If there's such a thing as deep, dark Australian roots music this is it.

Most noted for his work with drummer Ashley Davies, Matt has toured with people such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Cat Power and Nick Cave…as well as his own tours to different parts of the globe and recording critically acclaimed albums such as the ARIA award winning Soul Witness; it has been a good ride so far.
Recently Matt has been producing albums for Melbourne artists including Liz Stringer, Crystal Thomas and his longtime collaborator, Broderick Smith. This has led him to establish his own studio, The 8-Track Shack.
Whether he’s playing solo, as part of his duo with Ashley Davies, or in one of his other many musical collaborations, Matt Walker continues to be involved in some of the best music to come out of old Melbourne Town. And he’s a smoking hot guitar player to boot!

The Yearlings are Robyn Chalklen and Chris Parkinson, who have been writing and performing together for ten years, since first crossing paths at The Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2000.
Reminiscent of the great alt. country Americana genre, but born out of Adelaide, Australia, The Yearlings’ sound is all their own. They straddle old and new, bitter and sweet, darkness and transcendence – modern day porch music.
Duo: Robyn Chalklen – Acoustic guitar, vocals
Chris Parkinson – Electric guitar, Acoustic guitar, Banjo, vocals
Trio: with BJ Barker – Drums

A girl growing up in a small country town in Western Victoria disinterested in Aussie Rules, can feel like a stranger in a strange land. Thankfully, her older brother had a stereo and some vinyl. Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits saved her from certain death by boredom and began a lifelong passion for songs.
On leaving school, she worked at everything from machinist, waitress, milking cows, nursing, anything that would pay her rent in her search for meaning. Music and her love of nature were the constants.
Sara with her band, or solo, has played East Coast Blues and Roots Festivalx2, Mullum Music Festival x2, Gympie Muster, Splendour in the Grass, Tamworth Country Music Festival x 4, Wingham Akoostic Festival x2, and hotels, halls, cafes and loungerooms around the country.
"Tindley displays a Lucinda Williams-like intensity and maturity in her writing, and the delicious folk, soul, blues and country stylings support her argument that a late-blooming girl has a place in the world." Polly Coufos, The Australian
"I listen to a lot of new records every week, but nothing has echoed around in my head more consistently than the songs from Lucky The Sun" Marty Jones, Rhythms Magazine
"She's everything today's country music is and should be about...Lucky The Sun is a superb album, full of perceptive, warm and heartfelt songs delivered in a fresh contemporary way" Susan Jarvis, Capital News

The Baker Suite (Quartet) create a seductive world full of compelling stories and lush instrumentation. Their songs carry the listener through elegant ballads, gypsy romantica and a lurching night waltz in the rain. Difficult to categorise (pop/folk/jazz?), they’re often described as “french café music”. After releasing their most recent album in 2010, they have toured throughout Australia as well as Japan and New Zealand.
“I have always treasured great song writing, and after listening to The Baker Suites’ recordings I was struck by the depth and authenticity of the material. It harks back to great writers such as James Taylor, Jimmy Webb, Carole King or Burt Bacharach” Paul Grabowsky.
The Independent Weekly, Jim Mack
“The rich, lush sound of the opening moments of this performance drew the audience in and held it until the standing ovation and cheers for more at the end. John Baker, who writes the songs, has a whispering, almost raspy, vocal style – think Leonard Cohen or Jack Johnson. His acoustic guitar is subtle, rhythmic and tasteful. Buckby gives the band her distinctive sound with her gloriously melancholic accordion”.

Yet another one of Snooks La Vie’s rootsy projects comes ‘The Torinos’. Snooks, an avid lover of vintage Ford motor vehicles has aptly named his authentic old school blues band after the American muscle car.
It is not often you get a combo of musicians who all share the passion and craftsmanship for the same genre of music! The Torinos are an explosive Americana blues band and have been popping up recently across Adelaide to packed houses, entertaining excited blues fans with their energetic live performances.
The combo made up of some of Adelaide’s most ferocious blues musicians, on occasion's expand their live shows with a 3 piece horn section, which Snooks says packs enough punch as a Torino big block V8.
The Torinos perform some of their favourite toons by artists such as Earl King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Little Walter & James Cotton to name a few and their attention to detail with regards to this genre of music is second to none, just like a Torino at full throttle down the quarter mile!
The Torinos are:
Snooks La Vie – Vox & Harmonica
Pete Tsounis – Guitar
Steve Wilson – Guitar
Dennis Kipridis/ Enzo Russo – Bass
Larry Todd – Drums
Don’t miss them when they perform at the Semaphore Workers Club for the Semaphore Music Festival, Saturday 1st October.

Award wining songwriter Don Morrison has shared the stage with many of the biggest names in Australian music, like Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, Billy Thorpe, Joe Camilleri, Australian Crawl, Men At Work, Stephen Cummings, Ross Wilson and a hundred more in more than thirty years in music game.
He has worked with Bo Diddly, Joe Cocker, Rodriguez and even Billy Ray Cyrus He was brave enough to stand next to Shakin’ Stephens in a urinal and nearly killed by Willie Nelson in Austin, Texas.
He’s done gigs from Bridgetown to Byron Bay, from Sydney to San Antonio and released ten CDs of mostly original songs under his own name and that of his many bands such as The Bodgies, Raging Thirst, The Elmores, The Lonely Cosmonauts, Prawnhead and The Rank Outsiders.
He might not be as young and pretty as he once was but he’s not done yet. Dubbed the Larrikin Troubadour Laureate of Adelaide, Don is playing, singing and writing songs better than ever. The sense of humour that has seen him through the hardest times in a notoriously brutal industry still shines through in his songs and performances. He makes his own guitars, writes his own songs and sings them himself.
He’s coming to a venue near you soon.

Prawnhead honed our style on the streets and markets of Adelaide.
We found the faster we played, the more money we made.
We don’t play blues or folk, we don’t play country, we don’t play bluegrass nor do we play rockabilly but we play a mixture of all of those. We call it BLUEBILLY.
We can play unplugged in streets, beer gardens and small rooms. People are awestruck at the power of our unamplified sound. We are just as comfortable though, at festivals and halls on a big stage, pumping out our unique frenzied sound with a tightness that only blood relatives can achieve. Listen to our new CD “The World’s Premiere Bluebilly Band” and you’ll know it’s true.

Phil Parker, Andrew Hook, Dave Taylor, Geoff Bridgland and Leonard Cohen are Old South Bluegrass. We’re all getting older and all heading South – ain’t that the truth.... We haven’t got an uncle named Pen or lost all our money but a two dollar bill, but we still do Bluegrass like we did in the 70’s. We’ve kept the best of the old and the best of the new - the same broken hearts and lonesome nites but now with a lurking fear that we have at last, become the people our parents warned us about…..

There aren’t too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight, even if they might not know the name.
Every time you hear that favourite of Australia’s rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David’s distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes’ vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years.
David entered the musical fray as a singer in the early seventies and it wasn’t long before he started toying with the instrument that has become synonymous with his name. An “apprenticeship” under the harmonica greats, Paul Butterfield, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson laid a solid foundation in the blues technique, melody and mood. Whilst remaining true to his blues roots, the years have also seen him fraying into the country and rock territories rounding out his playing style and ultimately spotlighting him as one of Australia’s pre-eminent harp players. website |

Back Door Cajun is Adelaide’s premier Cajun band. They have been playing for 12 years at festivals and other venues around South Australia and interstate.
Traditional Cajun music was passed down from family to family in southern Louisiana. Described as a gumbo, the music is a mixture of Acadian French, Creole, Spanish, German, Celtic and African American influences.
Back Door Cajun is true to its roots, playing Cajun in an authentic south-western Louisiana way. As a dance band Back Door plays fiery Cajun and Zydeco two-steps, waltzes, and blues with a dash of Western swing.
Band members are a gumbo themselves—a cultural mixture hailing from all over—including Louisiana, Germany, Scotland, Wisconsin, the UK, as well as South Australia: Chris Hudson (vocals, acoustic lead guitar), Trevor Maddock (electric bass), Jane Thimke (vocals, acoustic guitar), Billy Thackray (drums), Arthur Bower (accordions, vocals), Ute Schwarz (accordion) Claire Thackray (percussion).
Back Door Cajun run open sessions at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel on the second Saturday afternoon of each month. |

Melbourne seven piece, The Bon Scotts, are not an AC/DC covers band. They play a distinctively clamorous ramshackle folk-pop that will have you toe tapping and singing along to catchy choruses unawares. Theirs is an infectious blend of playful cynicism and youthful fancy, which has delighted audiences nationally and abroad. To date, The Bon Scotts have received comparisons to Arcade Fire, Architecture in Helsinki and The Flaming Lips.
“big wraps indeed, but not too far off the money.” – artsHub
Their energetic and mischievous live performances have taken their music to sold out shows across Australia, sharing stages with the likes of Stornaway (UK), The Tom Fun Orchestra (CAN), The Tiger and Me and Mark Lang (Skipping Girl Vinegar). Recent notable shows include blowing Sydney crowds away at the Basement at the Popboomerang Records rarities launch and atop various stages at the Port Fairy Folk Festival.
“Live, The Bon Scotts are something to behold, all sweaty and beautiful, trashy and passionate” – Tim Burke from online music rag, The Dwarf.
Amongst the rubble of 7 instrumentalists, a charismatic union of found sounds, rickety rhythms, folk instrumentation and bellowing choruses is pulled into line by frontman Robert Zimmerman’s endearing satirical voice, examining the hypocrisy of popular culture and what it means to be young.
The band recently received the Arts Victoria: Victoria Rocks – Presentation & Promotion grant and more recently the Australia Council for the Arts New Work grant in order to create and release their follow-up album to their well received 2010 debut, Oddernity.
“The Bon Scotts, besides having the coolest name in music, have also achieved something like Next Big Thing status” – Tony McMahon, Inpress. Magazine (April 27th 2011)

Emily Davis troubadour, conjure woman, ritualist and story weaver. Sometimes black hearted, with whiskey soaked vocals this chanteuse has walked the line since her inception in this life as a singer-songwriter. Bringing dark country, swampy blues and gypsy heartache to her latest edition of works, her tale telling, reflections and musings strike straight through the heart. Dealing with forbidden love, death, homecoming and touching on the recurring archetypes of the past life, Emily has consulted her mixed Lebanese-Australian bloodline to share stories handed down. Cripple Creek is:
John Hyland: Dobro, guitar and vocals
Henk Groot: Guitar, mandolin, fiddle and vocals
Ron Williams: Banjo and vocals
Kev Smiff: Double bass and vocals
Cripple Creek is a bluegrass and alternative country music ensemble who, to quote from our website…
'… is an energetic acoustic foursome with stirring harmonies and instrumentals and a driving sound that play songs from spine tingling ballads to toe tapping breakdowns in a unique blend of bluegrass and alt-country.'
Cripple Creek band members have been performing for many years and during this time have played with many notable players including Paul Kelly, Bill Chambers, Shakin' Stevens, Gerry Hale from Uncle Bill and now as Cripple Creek.
We are an all acoustic band and with each of the four band members ready to stand up to the main microphone to lead a tune in song - and with fiery instrumentals, an evening with Cripple Creek is never dull.
In its short time together Cripple Creek has already gained great respect playing in hotels from as far afield as Gunbower in Victoria to the Barrosa Valley. We have also been honoured to be invited to perform later in the year at Australia's Premier Bluegrass event, the 23rd Harrietville National Bluegrass Convention.

SLIM PICKINS is a country-flavoured trio, born out of three friends' mutual admiration for classic songwriting, in particular, tunes penned by Oz greats Don Walker and Paul Kelly, as well as international legends such as Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt and contemporary artists like Mary Gauthier among others.
Sharing the lead vocal and guitar duties in the group are Joe Malabello and Nick Kipridis.
A resident of Largs bay, Joe has extensive experience both as a performer and in artist/tour management (Ian Moss, Bondi cigars, Don Walker and Tina Arena, to name a few).
Nick has been fronting local Blues/Roots band the Streamliners and is a recent recipient of Derringers Music "Blues guitarist of the year". Nick's also busy working with other like-minded artists around town.
Completing the line up is Greg Blanch (also of Largs bay) with his pedal-steel guitar, on "permanent" loan from Amber Joy Poulton's country showband, The Holy Men. Greg can be considered a "veteran" of Semaphore Music Fest's gone by, as he's performed in most of them as a member of various acts.
A large part of what makes this little combo unique, is the personal spin these musicians put on the songs and the stripped-back presentation, together with the hauntingly beautiful interplay between the two guitars, pedal steel and vocal harmonies - is a real winner. |

FLUFFY’S ROOTS ARE DARK... WITH SUICIDE BLONDE ENDINGS....
Fluffy’s style is hard to describe... All members hail from heavy alternative punk funk stoner backgrounds but they infuse their music with country, hillbilly, surf & swamp... with shuffle, classic rock and a bit of doo-wop thrown in!
It all began in late 2009 when Toxic Shock took a break and Bec kept playin’ geetar in her lounge room, writing tunes to purge her sins. Along came Michael (Meat Tray), who dutifully and faithfully inflected these purgings with his rhythmical accentuations. Meanwhile, Tony (Squid Jag) had spent many hours encouraging and indulging in the same purge-a-thon. Chris (Fear And Loathing) was eventually roped in after years of “We must collaborate on something” discussions over a beer, or at the local Foodland.
Finally in May 2010, the four of them went to Jay’s practice rooms to make some noise but they were missing a bass player. Bec had secretly hoped that her favourite, Hermann (Fear And Loathing), may be interested - although she didn’t like her chances... He graciously helped out at the next practice and they became one very dysfunctional but happy family.
By October, Bec had penned enough songs for a set, so they started recording and played their secret live debut the fol¬lowing month to a stunned audience. A four song Demo CD was released in December and shot to #1 on the 3D Radio Top 20+1, hovering in the top 10 well into the new year. This secured a #13 position in the Top 101 for 2010 after only 4 weeks of airplay!

| The Saucermen |
The Saucermen are a long running, well established, four piece neo-Rockabilly band from Adelaide South Australia. The Saucermen have evolved over the last 12 years within the realm of Adelaide’s Motley and ever churning music scene to stake their claim amongst those bands that write, produce and perform almost exclusively original material. As unique as the Saucermen’s songs may be, they (like all bands) have formulated their sound and style through the influence of those that went before them. The musical ear turned to a raucous Saucermen set will recognize the unmistakable influence of Eddie Cochran, The Cramps, The Meteors, Johnny Burnette, The Stray Cats and even a little Wall of Voodoo sprinkled into their peppery mix.
The band was formed in or around 2000 when Guitarist Chris Hayne set out to apply a harder edge take on traditional and neo Rockabilly/Punkabilly sounds and songs. At the kit was David Bond (formally of the Tomahawks). Steve Mitchell (currently of the Satellites) manned the upright Bass whilst throwing out lead vocals whilst Hayne tackled both lead and rhythm guitar respectively. As the Satellites grew increasingly popular Mitchell remained loyal to his original projects and exited the Saucermen that he keep Adelaide’s beloved Satellites in orbit. The situation was extremely fortuitous for Tomahawks frontman Stephen O’Malley who after over 13 years playing Rockabilly and folk music was offered a place in the Saucer as lead vocalist, he was mustard keen and fronted up ready to bite off more than he could chew then chew like hell.
Francis Macri was a seasoned and well respected veteran of both the Rockabilly and Blues fraternities of the Adelaide ol Skool and as such glided effortlessly into his new position on the double bass whilst taking the reigns as the group’s chief marketer, accountant and P.R. man. Bond continued on as skin smasher and the Saucermen spent the next 8 years performing scores of gigs, serving up their offerings to enthusiastic crowds both in the belly and outposts of Adelaide’s musical landscape. Throughout that time they recorded two eps “Valley of the Rattlin Bones”, (not to be confused with Casey Chamber’s ‘Rattlin Bones’, released much later), and the “Gravy Train ep”. Both consist of original material with the exception of one cover track released to pay tribute to the late Joe Strummer.

| Longhorn |
When Longhorn come out to play, they make it count. A rock’n’roll hybrid of “Hank Williams” and “The Stems” featuring one of Adelaide’s no.1 bass players, Mark Nichols, holding the show together. Drums are caressed or mercilessly beaten by ex “Johnny 7” and “King Daddy” monster, Pange. Guitar strings are sweetly shredded by Sean Tilmouth (ex Z28 and an Alice Cooper cover band) and Richard Gohl croons and hollers about car accidents, love and misbehaviour.

| Andy and Marta |
Inspired by the close harmony of the Everly Brothers, Andy & Marta are a captivating duo who have created their own unique blend of folk, country and acoustic-pop.
Andy is an award winning singer- songwriter who has lived and breathed music all his life and is well known in Adelaide from 10 years of writing and performing on Channel 7’s children’s show “The Book Place”. Marta, following in the footsteps of Emmylou Harris can ‘spot a harmony a mile away’ …..and when the voices of these two blend you can feel the magic in the air.
Since they joined forces Andy & Marta have been going from strength to strength, releasing their debut album "Harmony of One" in late 2009 and a follow up live album "Platform Soul" in 2010. Both releases have received regular airplay on local radio.
Over the last two years they have cultivated a strong following on the Adelaide folk circuit, getting a great response to their debut at Willunga Fleurieu Folk Festival 2010 and regularly playing popular Adelaide venues like The Wheatsheaf Hotel and SA Folk Centre.
With a new album in the pipeline and a collaboration with the Old South Bluegrass Band adding to their live sound, 2011 is set to be an exciting year for this pair of old fashioned folkies.
"Their sound is impressively reminiscent of the great American folk outfits of the '60s and '70s: The Seekers, Joan Baez, Carole King and Fleetwood Mac" -Music SA review

Sex, science and exorcism. VAN CLEEF are writing the soundtrack to their own race with the devil. Blending dirty, widescreen blues with southern-gothic space rock,VAN CLEEF remain the uncategorisable bastards of the Australian music scene - and plan to keep it that way.
