Semaphore Music Festival
1 – 4 October, 2010
Program details here
The Semaphore Music Festival showcases South Australian and interstate Live Music acts considered outstanding by industry professional standards, in an ideal historic seaside village setting.
The Semaphore Music Festival has built a reputation promoting live music acts on the crest of their careers, breaking down attitudes towards alt. country/folk/roots/blues and original contemporary music.
Located in the Western Suburbs adjacent to Port Adelaide and only 20 minutes from the CBD and the airport, the Semaphore Music Festival gives audiences and bands access to an alternate cultural experience that deepens our appreciation of the vibrant talent performing in the contemporary music sector today.
Held annually (since 2005) over the October Labour Day Long Weekend, the
Semaphore Music Festival is a four day state wide event fashioned on music festivals like the Katherine Music Muster and Tamworth. Over the years the Semaphore Music Festival has developed an underground niche market with its own flavour, texture, and character reflecting the diversity in the independent live music scene.
The contemporary music sector embraces the Semaphore Music Festival because it gives emerging artists the unique opportunity to perform in a festival environment that may not otherwise be accessible to them. It is recognised nationally by artists and music fans alike because it actively promotes original singer/songwriters to the broader community.
The timing of the Semaphore Music Festival coincides with Labour Day and October school holidays in most states. It is anticipated that music lovers from regional communities and interstate will travel to Adelaide over the weekend especially for this event.
The Semaphore Music Festival attracts capacity audiences at most venues. The overwhelming response from audiences, businesses, bands, and sponsors says the event is successful and growing. The addition of alcohol free family friendly concerts on the foreshore reserve enhances the program in terms of audience participation, cultural diversity and social inclusion.
The Semaphore Music Festival stages outdoor concerts on the Foreshore Reserve - Saturday ‘Rock and Roll High School’ features school age young people showcasing their bands. The Sunday ‘Alt. Country, Roots and Blues Fest’ appeals to a broad target audience with Indigenous acts performing with established non-Indigenous bands; the ‘Rawkfest’ on Monday gives us indie rock at its best.
Singer songwriters are supported through master classes, panel discussions, workshops, forums and performances giving established artists the opportunity to share their creative process with emerging artists and fans.
The Semaphore Music Festival includes a Music Instrument Makers Exhibition and a Luthiers’ Panel. The panels and forums including The Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society workshop give the audience and artists an interactive experience and the opportunity to explore different types of instruments.
Market stalls sell a variety of international food and merchandise on the Foreshore Reserve as well as cafes, pubs and fine dining restaurants on the Esplanade and Semaphore Road. Check www.semaphoremusicfestival.com for accommodation in and around Semaphore.
Bring your banana lounge, hats, and sunscreen and have a great weekend at the free events, workshops, and gigs. Some shows have minimal door charge so check the program for details (announced in June, and subject to change).
The Semaphore Music Festival acknowledges our generous sponsors for their support including the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, The SA Government through Arts SA and SA Tourism, Derringers, and the Port Community Arts Centre.
We hope you will join us, tell your friends and have a wonderful time at the 2010 Semaphore Music Festival.
